Did you know you can patent pasta shapes?

There are well over 2,000 patents on pasta shapes, including pasta shaped like the continental United States.

Thanks to Dan Lewis for pointing it out to me in his excellent newsletter, Now I Know (which you absolutely must subscribe to if you want to learn a little something every day).

Apparently inventing new pasta shapes is key to Kraft’s macaroni & cheese business.  They are constantly trying out new shapes in order to attract kids who are going to snatch of the next popular thing — whether pasta shaped like the USA or Spongebob Squarepants.

Lewis points to a Wall Street Journal article profiling Guillermo Haro, who holds 29 of those patents with his team of “pasta architects.”

I can’t add any more on top of what Lewis and the WSJ say, so take a gander at those articles.
